Daily Smudge | 8:15 – 8:28 Am | Portable Classroom
All students and staff at John Ware are invited to participate in a morning smudge in the portable classroom before school (from 8:15-8:28). Smudging is a traditional practice that consists of a smoke bath is used to symbolically cleanse a space, an article or person. It might be used to practice gratitude and/or to guide intentions for the day. Ms. Shelagh’s teachings include smudging the eyes to see others’ perspectives, the ears to hear/listen to others’, the mouth to speak with honesty and kindness, the feet to walk in others’
shoes, and the heart to come from a place of love, give love, and feel love. The burning of various sacred medicine plants to make a smudge or cleansing smoke is used by the majority of Indigenous North American peoples. The most common medicines used in a smudge are sweet grass and sage which is what will be used at John Ware.
Participation in smudging is optional and Parent/Guardians need to give permission for their child to smudge. Students can pick up a permission letter in the Wellness Lodge, Room 16. If your child is interested in participating or learning more about the four sacred medicines and smudging, please ask them to see Ms. Shelagh (She-la) in the Wellness Lodge.
