Grade 9 Farewell Celebration - June 13

Grade 9 students and their families will be receiving information in the coming weeks relating to the upcoming farewell celebration. We will have an afternoon ceremony in the gym with speeches and awards, followed by a fun evening at Heritage Park for students which includes rides, dinner and a dance. Students will also be informed of the expectations to attend this evening celebration including regular attendance, meeting school expectations and norms for behavior, and completion of learning to the best of their ability.

Red Dress Project - Whole School

Each year, students at John Ware sew flowers to add to this dress. Each flower is created in memory of and to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited Peoples. The project of creating flowers to add to a dress was taught to us by Otahpiaaki Fashion Week, Calgary’s Indigenous Fashion week. From 2016 to 2019, the Canadian government conducted the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The inquiry concluded that the high level of violence directed at Indigenous women and girls is "caused by state actions and inactions rooted in colonialism and colonial ideologies."

Students at John Ware will continue to sew flowers for this dress every May in honour of these women and as an act of reconciliation the national day of mourning for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited Peoples is May 15. As members of Treaty 7, students and staff are called upon to share these stories in conjunction with Otahpiaaki’s focus on iihpkim mootspi – “passing on the teachings that one has received, to communities in the hopes that Otahpiaaki will blossom in many Nations under the guidance of emerging Indigenous creatives, educators, and Elders”. We hope one day that we can stop sewing flowers because we as a country have come together to address this legacy of colonialism and ensured that everybody gets safely home.

General School Info, Resources and Calendar Mental Health Resource

The Summit

The Summit is designed and built to provide mental health services for children and youth. The centre offers therapeutic support through a day hospital and community-based treatment. It also provides walk-in services for anyone under 18 years of age and their family who would like to speak with a counselor. Walk-in services do not require a referral. When in crisis, families can see a psychologist and be assessed where they will make a plan and can also connect them to resources in the community. They also have a sexual health program available on a walk-in basis.

Attendance Procedures

*Attendance is taken in each class as part of our legal obligation. A student is marked present for class when they are physically in their class. This means students who are not in class, are marked absent.

Parent/Guardian Expectations

We ask families have a conversation with their child regarding the importance of attending class on time with all required materials.

  • In the event of an absence from class, we ask parents first have a conversation with their child about why they were not in class. Check PowerSchool to see notes (if provided).
  • Calling the office puts a great deal of pressure on a small number of staff to try to field numerous calls. School staff will not tolerate abuse from individuals calling to enquire about student attendance.
  • Please continue to notify us when a student is ill, away on vacation, or having to miss class due to appointments or other events by emailing johnware@cbe.ab.ca or calling the absence line 403-777-7930 ext. When students are absent and no reason is provided, it will be considered an unexcused absence.
