Attendance Line: 403-777-7930 ext. 1.
*Attendance is taken in each class as part of our legal obligation. A student is marked present for class when they are physically in their class. This means students who are not in class, are marked absent.
Parent/Guardian Expectations
We ask families have a conversation with their child regarding the importance of attending class on time with all required materials.
- In the event of an absence from class, we ask parents first have a conversation with their child about why they were not in class. Check PowerSchool to see notes (if provided).
- Calling the office puts a great deal of pressure on a small number of staff to try to field numerous calls. School staff will not tolerate abuse from individuals calling to enquire about student attendance.
- Please continue to notify us when a student is ill, away on vacation, or having to miss class due to appointments or other events by emailing johnware@cbe.ab.ca or calling the absence line 403-777-7930 ext. 1. When students are absent and no reason is provided, it will be considered an unexcused absence.
Regular attendance contributes to success at school. Students are expected to attend school unless illness or other unforeseen circumstances prevents them from doing so. Parents/guardians are required to call the school at the number above to explain and confirm the reason for a student's absence. Office staff arrives at the school by 8:00 a.m. and a telephone answering machine is available.
Students are expected to be inside the school by 8:35 a.m. for morning session, and 1:25 p.m. for afternoon session. Late arrivals for school shall check in at the office. Punctuality is a shared responsibility of students, parents and school staff. Excused lates are limited to appointments and unforeseen circumstances. Students late for reasons other than these will be considered to be unexcused.
Leaving Early
Students requesting to leave school early must bring a note to school. The note must be shown to the appropriate subject teacher and presented to the office when they leave. All students must sign out at the office prior to leaving the school before the end of the school day. For safety reasons, students are not permitted to leave school without permission from a parent or guardian.
Leave of Absence / Family Vacation
Written notification of any extended leave of absence from school should be given to the office prior to the absence. A leave of absence form should be filled out by the parent and teachers and returned to the office to help students continue in their studies while away. It is expected that students will find out what assignments and tests will have to be made up. When possible we will attempt to use electronic means to allow students to access homework/projects (email or D2L). We discourage extended absences around final exam times, as we may not be able to provide alternate times to write.
Attendance Expectations at the CBE
Regular and punctual attendance is foundational to student learning, academic achievement and long-term success. The CBE Administrative Regulation 6020 - Attendance of Students applies to all students, and outlines the responsibilities for students, parents and school staff.
